What is financial lease?

Financial leasing is business finance for an asset such as a car. You repay the financing in instalments. You are generally the economic owner: the car and financing obligation appear on your balance sheet. The financier may remain the legal owner during the term. The contract determines which costs and risks are yours; maintenance, repairs and insurance are usually the business owner's responsibility.

Read the information from the Dutch Chamber of Commerce and the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration. The tax treatment depends on the contract and your situation; If necessary, ask your accountant for advice.

Frequently asked questions about business car leasing

What is the difference between financial lease and operational lease?

With a financial lease you finance the purchase and you are usually the economic owner; the car and debt appear on the balance sheet. With operational leasing, you use the car for an agreed period and usually return it afterwards. Maintenance, insurance and other included services vary per contract. This website focuses on financial lease for entrepreneurs. See also the explanation from Chamber of Commerce.

Do I directly own the car?

With financial leasing you are usually the economic owner. The legal ownership and collateral arrangements depend on the contract; the financier can remain the legal owner during the term. Read the agreements before you sign.

Is VAT always fully and immediately deductible?

No. The VAT treatment depends, among other things, on the form of contract, the VAT-taxed activities of your company and private use of the car. The calculator does not determine VAT deductions. Read the information from the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration and ask your accountant for advice.

What costs are included in the monthly amount?

This calculator only uses the amount financed, the term, any balloon payment and the assumed interest rate. Insurance, maintenance, repairs, taxes, any down payment and other contract costs may be excluded. Check the full financing offer.

Can I change the term or balloon payment later?

That depends on the financier and the terms of the signed agreement. Discuss changes with the financier in advance.

Who is financial leasing suitable for?

This information and calculator are intended for entrepreneurs who want to explore business vehicle financing. A financier assesses each application individually and can impose conditions.

What documents do I need?

Business car leasing in the Netherlands

Which lease type and conditions suit your company?

Financial leasing is one way to finance a business car. In addition to the monthly amount, also look at ownership, costs that are included or not, the balloon payment and agreements in case of early termination or payment problems.

Financial lease: financing

You pay for the purchase in installments. Usually you are the economic owner and the car with the lease obligation is on the company balance sheet. The entrepreneur usually pays for maintenance, repairs and insurance himself. A down payment or final installment may be part of the contract.

Operational lease: use

You use a car for an agreed period and usually return it afterwards. The leasing company remains the owner. Included maintenance, insurance and other services depend on the contract. Operational lease is not a financial lease calculation.

Market image: figures for 2025

According to VNA, the Dutch lease fleet grew by 0.3% in 2025 to approximately 1.372 million cars. The number of commercially leased passenger cars was around 874,000. These are figures for the total lease market, not a separate market share for financial lease.

VNA explains that financial leasing is part of the market, but that many of these vehicles are not recognizable as such in the RDC data used.

Calculation assumptions

Adjust the assumed interest rate

The calculator uses an annuity formula with a balloon payment due at the end of the term. The nominal annual interest rate entered is divided by 12 to calculate the monthly rate. The example starts at 7,05%; this is not a current rate or financing offer.

The actual interest rate, term, financing amount and other terms are determined by the financier after assessing the application. The balloon payment is due at the end of the term; other costs may not be included in this estimate.
